Worf, played by Michael Dorn, is a main character in the TV series ''Star Trek: The Next Generation'' and in seasons four through seven of the series ''Star Trek: Deep Space Nine''. He also appears in the films based on ''The Next Generation''. Worf is the first Klingon main character to appear in ''Star Trek''. He has appeared in more ''Star Trek'' franchise episodes than any other character, and is the only main character to be a main cast member in more than one live-action ''Star Trek'' series, except for Miles O'Brien who was in season 1-5 of TNG and in season 1-7 of DS9.
==Casting==
Worf was at first not intended to be a regular character, since Gene Roddenberry wanted to avoid "retreads of characters or races featured prominently in the original ''Star Trek'' series", and so the June 1, 1987 cast portrait did not include Worf.〔Adam Schrager, ''The Finest Crew in the Fleet: The Next Generation Cast On Screen and Off''. New York: Wolf Valley Books (1997): 96 - 97〕 Several "tall, slim, black actors" auditioned for Worf before Michael Dorn came along, walking into the audition in character and not smiling.〔Schrager (1997): 97〕
Dorn is the only Star Trek actor to have worked concurrently on the ''Next Generation'' films and the ''Deep Space Nine'' series, however actor Colm Meany was on both the "Next Generation" and DS9" TV series. Both series are set in the same time period. In the feature film ''First Contact'', he is beamed aboard the ''Enterprise'' during the Borg's attack upon Earth.
